Where 4IceHockey's data comes from — and what we refuse to use
An unusually blunt post about sourcing. There is no free, licensed feed of live NHL data, we will not take one that says no, and here is exactly what that means — including the openly licensed source that gave us a standings table anyway.
Most sports sites never tell you where their numbers come from. We are going to, because on this site the answer explains some things you will notice are missing.
The rule we work to
We identify ourselves honestly, and we never disguise that identity to get in. Our collector calls itself 4IceHockeyBot with a link back to this page. If a source refuses it, we stop — we do not retry with a blank user-agent, a browser's user-agent or a different hostname, and we do not spread requests across a pile of sites so that nobody notices. A gap in someone's bot filter is not permission.
Where a source's terms are restrictive but the source does not block us, that is a judgement call rather than a technical one, and it belongs to whoever owns this site. On the NHL we made that call openly, and the next section says so.
The NHL, and a decision we are not going to hide
There is no licensed free source of live NHL data. The league runs an excellent public data service — keyless, undocumented, and carrying everything: live scores with period and clock, shots, goal-by-goal detail, the schedule and the standings. It answers our honestly identified collector without objection.
Its terms are another matter. NHL.com's terms of service reserve the services for non-commercial, informational, personal use, prohibit unauthorized automated compiling, and require written consent to publish or database that content. This site carries advertising.
We use it anyway. The owner of this site decided to, on the view that scores and standings are facts rather than anybody's property, and accepted the risk that goes with that. You are reading about it here because we would rather be straight with you than let you assume we hold a licence we do not hold. We take one polite request a minute while games are on, we identify ourselves, we circumvent nothing, and if the league asks us to stop we will stop.
One other source went a different way. The PWHL's stats platform is reached with keys embedded in the league's own pages, which is a different thing from a public endpoint — taking those is helping ourselves to someone's credentials, and we will not. A commercial hockey API refused our honest collector on every page, including the page containing its terms, so we could not even read what it wanted; a source that shuts the door stays shut.
What we actually use
College hockey comes from an open-source wrapper over the NCAA's own public results. It is unofficial — we say so — and it is the same source we use for the parts of this site that work best: live scores with period and clock, box scores with skater and goalie lines, scoring summaries with strength codes, and the NPI ranking. Our conference tables are computed by us from those results, because the upstream standings endpoint does not work.
Betting lines come from an odds API whose terms explicitly permit displaying their data on a commercial site. Their terms also prohibit re-offering it as a feed, so those snapshots are rendered on our server and never published as files you could download. It also serves as the fallback for scores if the league's service is ever unavailable to us.
Rosters and player bios come from a documented commercial API's free tier. Its paid tiers carry the statistics; we have not bought them, so we do not have them.
Wikipedia supplies the standings table whenever the league's own service is unavailable to us, under CC BY-SA with attribution on the page. It is written by volunteers, so it can lag by hours — the page says which source it is showing. The ranking and the wild-card race are computed by us on top of whichever one we have.
Team facts — arenas, cities, founding years — are hand-curated by us and cross-checked against Wikidata, which is public-domain. Where we are not sure, the page says so.
What you will notice is missing
- No NHL player statistics or leaderboards yet. The data exists; we have not built those pages.
- No PWHL scoreboard. We carry the twelve teams, their arenas and the news routing, and no invented scores.
- No player photographs. Not ours to republish.
- No prices in our gear guides. We are not a retailer and stale prices help nobody.
Every one of those gaps is a page that says why, with a link to somewhere that has what you want.
What we do instead
The half of this site that does not depend on anyone's feed is the half we are proudest of: equipment fitting verified against manufacturers and certification bodies, a hockey-parent guide checked against USA Hockey and Hockey Canada, ice safety quoted only from named authorities — including where those authorities disagree — and tools that run entirely in your browser.
And the search engine, which is the whole point of this site, indexes the people who do have the licensed data.
Tell us when we are wrong
Hand-curated facts come from human memory and they age. Arena names change, teams are renamed, rules are revised. The data sources page lists every source, its licence and what we use it for. If something on this site is wrong, we would genuinely like to know.
