It’s U.S. Thanksgiving: Time To Assess The 2025-26 NHL Playoff Picture
2+ day, 17+ hour ago (528+ words) Hockey Hall of Famer and current Los Angeles Kings general manager Ken Holland is credited with introducing the idea that an NHL team's place in the standings at U.S. Thanksgiving frequently foreshadows whether or not that team will make the playoffs. Since the league went to the current wild-card playoff format in 2013-14 " excepting the two COVID-impacted seasons " 77 percent of teams in a playoff position by points on Thanksgiving go on to make the playoffs, according to ESPN Research. In each of those seasons, between three and five teams fell out of the playoff picture and were replaced. This year, the standings are packed especially tight, which means there might be even more movement than usual. With no games on Thursday due to the holiday, let's take a look at where things stand. Because teams have not played the same number of…...
The Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympics: Team Canada Hopefuls
4+ day, 1+ hour ago (424+ words) 72 Days until the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Opening Ceremonies. Canada has won a total of 225 medals at the Winter Olympic Games since 1924, including 77 gold, 70 silver, and 78 bronze medals, placing it in a tie for fourth overall in all-time medal count. Canada has hosted the winter games twice: in Calgary in 1988, and in Vancouver in 2010. Below are some of the Canadian Winter Olympic hopefuls for 2026. To say that Canada has high expectations for its Olympic Men's Hockey Team is a gross understatement. In a June 16, 2025 press release Katherine Henderson, Hockey Canada's president and chief executive officer stated: Three-time Olympic medalist Mark McMorris and two-time Olympic medalist Laurie Blouin are veterans on the national team. McMorris has won bronze medals at three different Olympics (2014, 2018 and 2022) in the slopestyle event. Blouin in turn has won a silver medal in the slopestyle event in Pyeongchang in…...
The PWHL Vancouver Goldeneyes Are Setting A Standard In Women’s Sports
1+ week, 2+ hour ago (1001+ words) The Vancouver Goldeneyes and Seattle Torrent may be the two newest PWHL franchises, but their rosters include some of the most recognizable veteran faces in women's hockey. After scoring the first goal in franchise history for her new team before the Goldeneyes beat the Torrent 4-3 in overtime on Friday night, alternate captain and longtime Team Canada mainstay Sarah Nurse, 30, spoke with awe about what she'd just experienced. "I've played a lot of hockey games " a lot of really big hockey games " and I've never felt emotional like I have in that first 20 minutes of the game," she said. "It felt like something different was in the air, like I've never experienced. I have nothing but thanks and gratitude for this whole organization, the PNE, the league, for really placing us in a pretty special place." In the PWHL's third season,…...
Tampa Bay Lightning Reach Quarter Pole Having Battled Through Many Injuries
1+ week, 1+ day ago (432+ words) Jon Cooper recently referred to his team as a "Mash" unit. It would seem to be an apt term given he has had to dress 29 skaters through the first quarter of the season. No less than eight of them have missed at least two games due to injury. The fact the Tampa Bay Lightning went 11-7-2 through the first 20 games is a testament to the culture in the room, albeit one that has been missing core players of late, including pillars and defensemen Victor Hedman and Ryan McDonagh. Better now, though, than the last quarter of the season. "The big thing here is the longevity and having him be better in the long run," Cooper said of Hedman, who is at least a couple of weeks away from returning. D'Astous made his NHL debut with Tampa Bay on October 25 versus Anaheim…...
Bundesliga Media Rights Deal With OneSoccer Increases Reach In Canada
1+ week, 3+ day ago (482+ words) Bundesliga has found an additional media rights holder in Canada, Canadian Soccer Business (CSB). Starting with matchday 11 on Nov. 21, 2025, CSB has acquired the non-exclusive media rights to Bundesliga games. The rights will be licensed to OneSoccer, which will gain access to Bundesliga games, the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, and the relegation playoffs. While OneSoccer will be able to show games, all games will also continue to be shown on DAZN. Ahead of the season, the Bundesliga renegotiated its deal with DAZN from an exclusive to a non-exclusive partnership. This means the league was able to bring on additional partners. Indeed, Bundesliga International remains in discussions with other partners in Canada to further grow its brand in one of the up-and-coming soccer markets. "We have had an open window to renegotiate the deal with DAZN ahead of the season," Bundesliga Americas Executive…...

The NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs Are Struggling To Find Ways To Win
1+ week, 5+ day ago (463+ words) For the last nine years, the large and vocal fanbase of the Toronto Maple Leafs has lamented its team's inability to make a meaningful push for the Stanley Cup. This year's incarnation of the NHL's most valuable franchise is reminding observers that things can get worse. Toronto's championship drought is now creeping toward 60 years. Many of those seasons ended without a sniff of the playoffs. At the United Center in Chicago on Saturday, the Leafs built a 2-1 lead but surrendered two third-period goals to the upstart Blackhawks for their fifth-straight loss. Approaching the quarter mark of the 2025-26 campaign, the Leafs are 8-9-2. Heading into games on Monday, Nov. 17, they're seventh in the Atlantic Division and 28th in the league standings by both points (18) and points percentage (.474). Yes, they're banged up. The team's long injured list is headlined by captain Auston Matthews, who…...
The Sacramento Kings’ Impending Rebuild Is Better Late Than Never
1+ week, 6+ day ago (590+ words) Since Vivek Ranadiv" purchased the Sacramento Kings in 2013, they've had only two winning seasons and made the playoffs once. During that time, they've cycled through eight head coaches and four front office regimes, not counting Joe Dumars' one-month tenure as interim executive vice president of basketball operations in 2020. The Kings are now off to a 3-11 start this season after their 123-110 loss to the Victor Wembanyama-less San Antonio Spurs on Sunday. If Zach LaVine picks up his $49.0 million player option for the 2026-27 season, they already project to be well over next year's salary cap, too. They have no hope of pulling off a reset unless they take a stick of dynamite to their roster. According to local radio host Carmichael Dave, the Kings appear to be considering that. In the wake of that report, head coach Doug Christie told reporters that…...
The Love Affair With MLS Cup Playoff Penalty Shootouts Is Backfiring
3+ week, 8+ hour ago (814+ words) From the moment Major League Soccer announced its current playoff format, it was clear that sooner or later, a team would come along and expose its obvious flaw: That it was possible to win a best-of-three opening round series with what was technically a losing record. After close calls in the first two seasons, the third has seen Minnesota United finally do it. They opened the series against Seattle with a win on penalties following a 0-0 draw. Then on Saturday, they triumphed at home on penalties again following a 3-3 draw. In between, they lost the middle game in Seattle, 4-2. Of all the possible teams to earn a series victory this way, Minnesota deserves more love than most. While they still finished the series with a record of 0W-2D-1L, manager Eric Ramsay's men rallied from a goal down while a man down…...
